The mission of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships among the many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events that exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe and celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
Our Social Change work is the presentation of programs that inspire and engage the community pursuing the ideals of Dr. King, who believed the elimination of racial discrimination to be a moral imperative. The committee works throughout the year to create programs that include arts and cultural events that showcase the richness of our community and to engage our diverse audiences in activities that enhance cross-cultural understanding and encourage peaceful coexistence.
I’ve been an active participant with the MLK Jr. Committee since its formation over 12 years ago. I have served in several capacities and I am currently a member of the advisory board. I support the work of this Committee because I believe in the message of Dr. King and his legacy of working toward peace and fellowship. I say as he said, “we may have all come on different ships, but we’re all in the same boat now.”
