The CSA’s mission is to expose as many SBHS students as possible to computer science and to demonstrate its relevance to their academic and career interests. Through innovative courses, opportunities outside the classroom, and industry partnerships, academy students will expand their knowledge and experience in computer science and gain preparation to pursue a career in this dynamic field.
Our social change idea is to give all students at SBHS the opportunity to be exposed to computer science and acquire the computer science skills necessary to enter the workforce. This includes those aiming at jobs right out of high school or a two-year college as well as those aiming at a four-year college and/or graduate school. As computer-related professions grow rapidly, the field remains overwhelmingly white and male. We are helping to change this story through student-led outreach to young people who might not receive exposure to the rewarding opportunities accessible through a computer science education. We are proud that the CSA’s demographics approach the diversity of our school at large. This is how we build a more equitable future.
"The Computer Science Academy was like a second home to me at Santa Barbara High School. I developed skills in coding and also in public speaking and teaching. The teachers, guest speakers, etc. helped us work together to become amazing scholars and open the door to endless possibilities. The CSA influenced me to go into a computer-related career where I will get the opportunity to work on the world’s most powerful military submarines in combat systems, communications, navigation or underwater acoustic technologies! Thank you, Mr. Muhl and Mr. Johnston, for letting me be a part of this amazing program!" SBHS CSA senior, class of 2018
