Social Change Project:
Latinx communities are disproportionately impacted by teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. These higher rates are created by social conditions that are more likely to affect minorities, including poverty, fewer jobs, and low education levels. Our social change project is to lower barriers to discussing sexual health in Latinx communities in North Santa Barbara County through our peer education program, Promotorxs. Promotorxs provides Spanish-speaking Latinx peer educators with rigorous training by Planned Parenthood’s professional sex educators. With this training, peer educators are able to empower their communities with valuable sex education and support.
I am pleased to share my experience as a Promotorx. Knowing that my community has many [sex education] needs enabled me to do effective outreach but most importantly gain the trust of each person who shared their needs and concerns. When explaining Planned Parenthood’s services, there were questions that confirmed the community’s interest in learning about sex education and sharing [this information] with their children given that culturally our Latinx community is not familiar with or used to talking about this. My greatest pride as a Promotorx is [my contribution] and the effective reach that will help many families. Our goal was not to meet a number, but that the information we shared could help all the families that gave us the opportunity to know and inform them of the different services we offer in a confidential and safe way. – Translated from Spanish and edited for clarity.
