We build affordable homes with site-based services that offer opportunities to change lives and strengthen communities on the central coast of California.
Creating great neighborhoods needs engaged residents who are unafraid to use their voices. Rather than passively accepting decisions made by others, residents of Peoples’ Self-Help Housing’s Isla Vista Apartments deserve to have a say in decisions that affect them. They will build on two years of leadership development as they tackle neighborhood safety, create beautiful shared spaces, and build their capacity to collaborate with city and county representatives. This project empowers low-income people to participate in decisions around building a safe, inclusive community. To date, residents have improved the safety of Children’s Park, worked with the UCSB Community Garden Network, and received training through the county Sheriff’s Office.
The Resident Leadership Development program has helped me grow so much as a person. I have always loved helping people, and now I am helping more people than ever. I try to encourage all many of my neighbors, especially other women, to get involved. It has helped me move on from tough times, and I know it can help them move forward too.
