The mission of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria is to inspire and empower girls and women to achieve personal, social, political, and economic success in order to become strong, smart, and bold.
Girls Inc. offers a continuum of age-appropriate advocacy opportunities for girls from transitional kindergarten to high school. Younger girls take part in our annual She Votes program, learning about the democratic process, exploring elections and local candidates, and taking part in a mock election. Teen girls examine public policy priorities and social issues affecting their communities. Girls work to establish action items and share them with area lawmakers as well as in meetings with legislators in D.C. We need your support so that our girls can continue to make long-term change by addressing the root causes of injustice.
In [Girls Inc], I learned that my vote counts and is important. I also discovered girls and women are needed in leadership positions. Early this school year, talk about elections for Associated Student Body arose. I wanted to run for president, but I was scared of campaigning and delivering my candidacy speech to the student body. I was terrified! I reflected on what I had learned at Girls Inc. and remembered that I am a leader, I am a role model, and my voice does have power. I promised to close the gap between students and teachers and to improve the school for all students. Despite losing in a close race by about 20 votes, I am proud of myself. I plan to continue being a part of student government in high school. I have the perseverance to get up and try again because of Girls Inc.
