Social Change Project:
Horizon Youth Educational Program
Our goal is to bring about social change by connecting at-risk youth with college student mentors to introduce youth to college opportunities at an early age and influence them to pursue their academic interests and envision a better future. Mentors from Allan Hancock College will provide personalized instruction in STEM subjects to encourage youth to achieve their potential and lead them onto a path to college. Working with the Santa Maria YMCA, which has led an extremely successful similar program, we hope to substantially increase college matriculation rates in northern Santa Barbara County.
Hi, I am 11 years old and I have three siblings. One of the things I like the most about the YMCA is that you can make many new friends and it is very fun. I’ve learned many interesting things. I’ve learned about the water cycle, math, and science. They’re very interesting and fun to do. We get so many opportunities to do new things and I wouldn’t be able to do that anywhere else, there’s no program exactly like it. I want to go to college because I want to make my family proud, not many of my family members have attended college. So I want to be someone who has gone to college.
