A Letter From The Santa Barbara Independent

Dear Readers,

In 2017, the Independent in partnership with The Fund for Santa Barbara launched the pilot program Santa Barbara Gives!, a year-end online fundraising program for area nonprofits. More than 590 donors combined to give over $400,000 to 44 nonprofits. This year we are partnering again with The Fund for a 2018 campaign. In the pages that follow, we introduce you to 55 nonprofit organizations that range from large agencies to all-volunteer grassroots organizations, all of them working hard to make our community thrive. Each organization presents a social change project you can help fund through a donation at sbgives.org. Their work focuses on areas from arts and culture and the environment to homelessness, LGBTQ well-being, and youth and education.

Faced with the natural disasters of this past year, our community showed how resilient we can be when we come together and work for the greater good. We hope that presenting these nonprofits and their projects inspires you to learn about the work they are doing in our community and to give a donation as low as $10 to help them reach their goals.

The selected nonprofits are a small sliver of the nonprofit organizations that make up the fabric of our community, but they each have ambitious projects to make our community more accessible, empowered, and sustainable. The projects they put forward look to change systemic issues as opposed to fixing symptoms. It is easy to get complacent in our day-to-day lives, but now is the time to be conscientious about what is going on around us. Through this program, we hope to introduce you to organizations that you may not know about and provide an easy way to support their work to improve the lives of all of us.

This endeavor was not possible without the efforts of The Fund for Santa Barbara, and we are deeply appreciative of their partnership. We also thank the Brittingham Family Foundation, the McCune Foundation, and Montecito Bank & Trust for their support of this program and the 55 nonprofit organizations participating this year for their tireless work. Finally, we thank you for being an Independent reader. Now it’s your turn to visit sbgives.org and Give!
