A Letter From The Fund for Santa Barbara
Dear Santa Barbara Independent Reader,
The Fund for Santa Barbara is honored once again to be partnering with the Santa Barbara Independent to help raise critical funds for some of our region’s most important community-based organizations. The success of last year’s pilot program – over $400,000 raised for 44 nonprofits – shows that Santa Barbara Gives! has tremendous potential, and we are grateful to the more than 900 donors for that success! It’s not often that a media outlet is willing to leverage their platform to help raise that level of support to address community challenges. We applaud the Santa Barbara Independent for stepping up again to help our community in this way.
While Santa Barbara County is fortunate to be a region of tremendous prosperity and natural beauty, our region also faces many of the same problems that challenge our society as a whole: poverty, environmental degradation, homelessness, racial and ethnic prejudices, violence against women, homophobia, and many other social, economic, and environmental problems.
In this guide you will find over fifty social change and cultural projects selected by the FUND’s activist-led Grant Making Committee, who are working to address some of those problems here, where we live and work. Most of these groups are working for change by focusing on the root causes of societal problems by providing long-term solutions while operating in a manner that advances democracy here at home, and being responsive to and directed by the people they serve.
We encourage you to take a good look at this guide and consider supporting any number of the organizations featured. And then please share this guide with a friend, or better yet, visit SBGives.org and share it with your social media networks.
With much gratitude,
Marcos Vargas, Ph.D.
